more about Tilman Köhler
After studying medicine at the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg from 1977 to 1983, he worked as a junior doctor and from 1988 as a specialist / senior physician for pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Protestant children’s hospital “Anna Hospital” Schwerin (1883-1994). In addition to general pediatric care, he was already interested in children with severe multiple disabilities.
After the closure of the children’s hospital in 1994, Dr. Köhler was medical director of the newly established mother-child rehabilitation clinic at Schwarzen Busch on the island of Poel near Wismar until 2004.
Here too, within the scope of the possibilities available at the time, he paid particular attention to the treatment of families with disabled children.
From 2004 to 2022, he worked at the Mecklenburg Schwerin Children’s Center – the socio-pediatric center (SPZ) – most recently as Medical Director until 2022.
In addition to graduating as a systemic consultant and child and adolescent therapist from the Society for Systemic Therapy (DGSF) in 2006, Dr. Köhler acquired the qualifications for botulinum toxin therapy according to the criteria of the Arbeitskreis Botulinumtoxintherapie e.V. With a supplementary Master’s degree at the Danube University Krems from 2009 to 2012, Dr. Köhler acquired the qualification (MSc) of interdisciplinary orientation in the sense of neuro-orthopaedics disability management.
Now retired, he continues to work part-time at the SPC Mecklenburg, focusing on the comprehensive interdisciplinary care of children and adolescents with severe developmental disorders and neuromuscular diseases. In particular, the interdisciplinary specific pediatric neuro-orthopaedic cooperation with specialists from Hamburg, Lübeck and Potsdam has shaped and continues to shape the specific focus of the supra-regional interdisciplinary consultation hours at this SPC.
Dr. Köhler has been active in professional politics in recent years as deputy spokesperson for the Federal Working Group of Social Paediatric Centres in Germany. He is also involved in the working groups “Aids” and “Revision of the Altötting Paper” in the Central Quality Working Group (ZQAK) of the SPCs within the German Society for Social Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (DGSPJ).
